ADELAIDE designers are so stylish they stop traffic in the world’s fashion capital, Paris. Literally.
“We had cars waiting for us to take
the photo,” Adelaide Fashion Festival creative director Chris Kontos says of what went on during a very chic photoshoot.
Shared exclusively with the Sunday Mail, the images were created when Kontos accompanied Adelaide designer Paul Vasileff, of Paolo Sebastian fame, on a recent trip
Vasileff was the first South Australian to present a collection in Paris, launching his “Gilded Wings” in La Maison Champs Élysées with a showroom presentation for key international fashion media and buyers.
Seeing an opportunity to gain exposure for other SA talent, Kontos packed an extra bag filled with new season samples from C/MEO Collective, Lexi, So It Goes, Naomi Murrell and Tiff Manuell.
“I thought ‘How cool would it be to do a street-style shoot with all our designers?’,” Kontos says. “I felt like everyone needed to
be a part of the Paris moment.”
Thinking he would hire a local photographer when he got there, Kontos discovered fellow Adelaidean Simon Cecere was also in Paris –
The shoot, which took just three hours, featured Parisienne model Kate, who is signed with IMG and was available between Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week shows and castings.
“It was just off the cuff … we walked around the streets of Paris trying outfits on and playing it by ear,” says Kontos, who showed himself to be a very hands-on festival creative director, styling the shoot himself.
“We had a ‘live changeroom’ … I knew how to position her so she wouldn’t be nude in the streets of Paris, but no-one cares about that there anyhow.”
As for the onlookers, some of whom had cameos, Kontos says they were all fans of the outfits. “Everyone was very interested in what was going on and they all wanted to be a part of it, which was great,” he says, adding “Only in Paris”.
“Paris is the hub of fashion … designers are like celebrities,” Kontos says.
“It’s like that (in Adelaide) on a smaller scale because we are a very cosmopolitan city.
“You can really tell when someone is from Adelaide by their style and the way they dress.”
